Using high temperature superconductor (HTSC), this kit demonstrates an intriguing magnetic property of superconductors, known as the Meissner effect. The kit demonstrates the levitation of small rare earth magnet above
the high temperature superconductor, caused by the partial expulsion of the magnetic flux from the HTSC sample. Liquid nitrogen (not supplied) is required as a coolant, to bring the superconductor below its critical temperature. When the superconductor is cooled, under a weak magnetic field, to a temperature below its critical temperature, it becomes
superconducting i.e. loses its electrical resistance. The magnetic field becomes expelled from the superconductor, causing it to become perfectly diamagnetic. At this stage, the sample is said to be in the Meissner state.
Please note: liquid nitrogen is required, but not supplied.
Kit Includes:
• Insulated Styrofoam holder
• Superconducting HTSC disk
• NdFeB rare earth magnet
• Tweezers
• Instructions, including advice for handling liquid nitrogen
