Axial & Lateral Search Coil

The Axial and Lateral Search Coil set is a precision physics accessory designed for investigating magnetic fields, flux density, and electromagnetic induction. These coils are widely used in school and college physics laboratories for quantitative and qualitative studies of magnetic field strength and direction.

Each search coil consists of 5,000 turns of very fine copper wire wound onto a bobbin and mounted on a rigid fibreglass board. The fibreglass support is electrically insulated and non‑magnetic, ensuring that measurements are not affected by the mounting material. At the opposite end of the board, two 4mm socket terminals provide secure and convenient electrical connections.

The coils can be placed inside the air gap of magnets or solenoids to determine magnetic field strength or flux density. By applying an AC or DC signal to the coils, students can also study the interaction between magnetic fields and induced voltages, helping to reinforce key principles of electromagnetism.

The set includes both coil orientations:

• Axial Search Coil – coil axis parallel to the axis of the PCB board
• Lateral Search Coil – coil axis mounted at 90° to the axis of the PCB board

These different orientations allow comparison of magnetic field components and help students understand the vector nature of magnetic fields. The axial and lateral coils are also available separately if required.
