Molecular Model – Orbit Colourwave Carbon 60 (Buckminsterfullerene) [0508]

The Orbit Colourwave Carbon 60 Molecular Model is a visually striking teaching aid designed to illustrate the unique structure of buckminsterfullerene (C₆₀), commonly known as a bucky‑ball. Ideal for KS3, GCSE, and A‑Level chemistry, this model helps students understand modern carbon chemistry and advanced molecular structures.

Formed in the shape of a spherical bucky‑ball, the model represents 60 carbon atoms arranged in a pattern of pentagons and hexagons, similar to the structure of a football. With an overall height of approximately 15cm, the enlarged scale makes this complex molecular geometry easy to observe and explain during classroom demonstrations.

As part of the Orbit Colourwave model range, the Carbon 60 model uses clear, colour‑coded components to reinforce atomic connectivity and molecular symmetry. It provides an excellent visual contrast to traditional diamond and graphite structures, helping students appreciate the diverse allotropes of carbon.

Key Features

  • Large‑scale Carbon 60 (C₆₀) molecular model
  • Distinctive bucky‑ball (spherical) structure
  • Contains 60 carbon atoms
  • Approximate height: 15cm
  • Clear, colour‑coded design for easy visualisation
  • Part of the Orbit Colourwave molecular model range
  • Durable construction for repeated classroom use
  • Designed for secondary school chemistry education

Ideal for School Science Lessons

This Carbon 60 model is ideal for GCSE and A‑Level chemistry lessons exploring allotropes of carbon, nanotechnology, and modern materials science. Its bold 3D form helps students grasp structures that are difficult to visualise using diagrams alone.

  • Teaching carbon allotropes (diamond, graphite, fullerenes)
  • Exploring buckminsterfullerene (C₆₀) structure
  • Supporting discussions on nanotechnology
  • Comparing molecular shapes and bonding arrangements
  • Enhancing engagement with modern chemistry concepts

Clear, modern, and visually engaging, the Orbit Colourwave Carbon 60 Molecular Model is an excellent classroom resource that brings advanced carbon chemistry to life and supports deeper student understanding of molecular structure.
