The Edvotek Alu Human DNA Typing Using PCR Kit gives students the opportunity to explore modern genetics by determining their own genotype at the PV92 Alu insertion site on chromosome 16. Using specialised primers targeting a 300 base‑pair Alu insertion, students amplify their DNA and visualise the results to see whether they are homozygous (+/+ or –/–) or heterozygous (+/–) at this well‑studied genetic marker.
Once students have analysed their results, they can compare their class data with global datasets available online—helping them understand genetic variation and population genetics firsthand. Designed for up to 25 students, this kit includes all necessary reagents for DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and gel electrophoresis.
The kit provides proteinase K, PCR EdvoBeads™, primers, control DNA, microtubes, chelating agent, agarose, DNA ladder, loading dyes, buffers, and both FlashBlue™ and SYBR® Safe stains. Equipment required includes micropipettes (5–50 μl), a water bath, thermal cycler, electrophoresis system, power supply, and a UV transilluminator.
You need: Micropipettes (5–50 μl), tips, water bath, thermal cycler, electrophoresis apparatus, power supply, microwave or hot plate, UV transilluminator.
Perfect for GCSE, KS5, and A‑Level Biology, this kit connects theory with real‑world genetic analysis. Students gain hands‑on experience with:
Engaging, relevant, and curriculum‑aligned, the Edvotek Alu Human DNA Typing Using PCR Kit provides a powerful and memorable introduction to human genetics and biotechnology.
