When used with the plano‑convex lens (plane face toward the lamp) and the supplied slit masks, the ray box can produce divergent, convergent, or parallel light beams by adjusting the lamp position relative to the lens. This makes it ideal for studying refraction, reflection, dispersion, and image formation using prisms, blocks, or mirrors.

The adjustable top lid minimises stray light leakage, and the internal 12V, 21W lamp provides a bright, clear beam. A selection of colour filters enables coloured light investigations when ambient light is reduced.
