ONPG (o‑Nitrophenyl‑β‑D‑galactoside) – LR Grade, 1g

ONPG, short for o‑Nitrophenyl‑β‑D‑galactoside, is supplied in a 1g pack and manufactured to Laboratory Reagent (LR) grade. This synthetic substrate is widely used in educational biology and biochemistry laboratories for investigating enzyme activity, particularly β‑galactosidase.

Identified by CAS Number: 369‑07‑3 and with no UN number, ONPG is not classified as hazardous for transport when handled appropriately. When hydrolysed by β‑galactosidase, it produces o‑nitrophenol, which forms a clear yellow colour. This visible change makes ONPG especially suitable for quantitative and qualitative enzyme studies in a teaching laboratory.

Supplied in solid form for stability and accurate weighing, ONPG allows reliable, repeatable preparation of test solutions for practical lessons and supervised investigations.

Key Features

  • ONPG (o‑Nitrophenyl‑β‑D‑galactoside)
  • Laboratory Reagent (LR) grade
  • 1g pack – suitable for educational use
  • CAS No: 369‑07‑3
  • No UN number – non‑hazardous for standard handling
  • Synthetic substrate for β‑galactosidase
  • Produces a clear yellow colour on hydrolysis
  • Clearly labelled for safe storage and handling
  • Suitable for school biology laboratories and prep rooms

Ideal for School Science Lessons

ONPG is particularly well suited to GCSE and A‑Level biology and introductory biochemistry lessons, especially where enzyme kinetics and metabolic pathways are studied. All use should be conducted under appropriate supervision and in line with school laboratory guidance.

  • Demonstrating enzyme‑catalysed reactions
  • Investigating β‑galactosidase activity
  • Studying reaction rates and enzyme kinetics
  • Producing quantitative colour‑change results
  • Developing skills in solution preparation and measurement

Reliable, visually clear, and curriculum‑relevant, ONPG LR Grade 1g is a valuable teaching reagent that helps students gain a strong understanding of enzyme activity through hands‑on experimental investigation.
