Luminol, also known as 3‑Aminophthalhydrazide, is a specialist laboratory chemical supplied in a 5g pack for controlled use in educational science laboratories. Provided in Laboratory Reagent (LR) grade, this compound is widely recognised for its role in chemiluminescence experiments and visually engaging classroom demonstrations.
Identified by CAS No. 521‑31‑3 and classified as Not Regulated for transport (UN: NR), Luminol is easy to store and manage within school laboratory environments. It is clearly labelled to support safe handling and use in accordance with school laboratory procedures and COSHH guidance.
Luminol is best known for producing a bright blue glow when it reacts with an oxidising agent in the presence of a catalyst, making it an excellent reagent for demonstrating energy changes and reaction mechanisms in a highly memorable way.
Luminol is ideal for GCSE and A‑Level chemistry lessons, particularly when introducing more advanced or engaging practical demonstrations. Under appropriate teacher supervision, it can be used to support:
Compact, high‑impact, and highly engaging, Luminol helps bring chemistry to life and supports deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms, making it an excellent addition to any secondary school science department.
