Laplace Law Apparatus – Magnetic Force Demonstration (KS4+)

The Laplace Law Apparatus is a robust and reliable piece of equipment designed to demonstrate the force exerted on a current‑carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field. Ideal for KS4 and post‑16 physics, this apparatus provides students with a clear, hands‑on demonstration of the fundamental principles behind the motor effect and the Laplace force.

The setup features durable aluminium rails and a smooth‑running mobile bar equipped with a clearly marked disc for visual tracking. Fitted with 4mm safety banana sockets, the apparatus is compatible with standard school laboratory power supplies. When a current of approximately 2.5A is applied, the mobile bar moves along the rails, demonstrating the interaction between the magnetic field and the electric current.

To support understanding of magnetic fields, the apparatus is supplied with two coloured magnetic pole markers (red and blue) to identify the poles of the U‑shaped magnet and to indicate the direction of the magnetic field. This allows students to easily relate the observable motion to theoretical diagrams and Fleming’s Left‑Hand Rule.

Key Features

  • Demonstrates the Laplace force and the motor effect
  • Sturdy aluminium rails and smooth mobile bar system
  • Mobile bar includes a marked disc for movement observation
  • Fitted with 4mm safety banana sockets for secure connections
  • Requires approx. 2.5A to set the mobile bar in motion
  • Supplied with red and blue markers to show magnetic poles and field direction
  • Ideal for KS4, GCSE, and post‑16 physics lessons

Ideal for School Science Lessons

Perfect for KS4 and A‑Level physics, the Laplace Law Apparatus provides a clear and engaging demonstration of how magnetic fields interact with electric currents. It is suited for lessons exploring:

  • The motor effect and practical applications of electromagnetic force
  • Fleming’s Left‑Hand Rule and the direction of motion
  • The relationship between magnetic field strength, current, and force
  • Real‑world applications such as electric motors and railguns
  • Understanding field direction using colour‑coded pole markers

This apparatus provides an excellent visual and practical method for demonstrating core electromagnetism principles, helping students make clear connections between theory and real‑world applications.
