The Ingenhousz’s Conductivity Apparatus is a classic and highly effective tool for demonstrating the different rates of thermal conductivity in metals. Suitable for KS3 and above, this apparatus features five metal rods—one each of aluminium, brass, copper, zinc, and iron—embedded along one side of a sturdy metal tank measuring 150 × 90 × 100mm.

To compare thermal conductivity, students simply place wax at the ends of the rods. As the tank is heated, the wax melts at different rates, visually showing how efficiently each metal transfers heat.
