The g by Free Fall Apparatus provides a clear and accurate method for determining the acceleration due to gravity, making it ideal for KS4 and A‑Level Physicselectromagnet release unit, a heavy steel sphere, and a platform fitted with a microswitch, all housed in durable moulded plastic casings designed for repeated use in school laboratories.
When the sphere is held by the electromagnet, switching the release control to the upward position simultaneously cuts power to the magnet and starts an external timer. As the sphere drops, it falls freely under gravity until it lands on the platform’s cork mat, triggering the built‑in microswitch to stop the timer. This provides an accurate measurement of the time taken to fall a known distance, allowing students to calculate g.
For best performance, it is recommended to use this apparatus with the Eisco Laboratory Timer (Code 0945), which includes a suitable power supply for the electromagnet and plugs directly into the system.
Perfect for KS4 and KS5 Physics, this apparatus supports a wide range of learning objectives related to motion and forces, including:
Reliable, precise, and classroom‑ready, the g by Free Fall Apparatus is an essential tool for teaching fundamental principles of motion and gravitational acceleration in secondary and post‑16 physics.
