Edvotek Transformation of E. coli with pGAL – Blue/White Gene Expression Kit

The Edvotek Transformation of E. coli with pGAL Kit provides an engaging hands‑on introduction to bacterial transformation and gene expression. In this experiment, students introduce the pGAL™ plasmid into E. coli cells, allowing them to observe a distinctive blue colour change in transformed colonies. This colour is produced by the expression of the β‑galactosidase enzyme, encoded by the fully functional lacZ gene carried on the plasmid.

Unlike other transformation systems, this kit does not require IPTG because the pGAL™ plasmid contains the complete lacZ gene, enabling direct expression once the plasmid is successfully incorporated. Designed for 10 lab groups (2–4 students per group), the kit includes everything needed to perform the transformation, plate the bacteria, and visualise results using blue/white screening.

The kit includes BactoBeads™ for preparing competent cells, plasmid DNA, X‑Gal indicator, media, buffers, ReadyPour™ agar, sterile pipettes, loops, petri dishes, microtubes, and full instructions. Required equipment includes a 37 °C incubator, water bath, and a microwave or hot plate.
