Edvotek Transformation of E. coli – Blue & Green Fluorescent Proteins Kit

The Edvotek Transformation of E. coli with Blue & Green Proteins Kit introduces students to one of the most widely used tools in biotechnology: fluorescent proteins. The Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) originates from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and is used globally in genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, and medical research. Scientists have also engineered a variant—Blue Fluorescent Protein (BFP)—by mutating the GFP gene, expanding its scientific applications.

In this engaging experiment, students will transform bacteria with plasmids carrying GFP, BFP, or a combination of both, allowing them to observe glowing colonies under long-wave UV light. This hands-on activity highlights plasmid transformation, gene expression, and protein function in a visually exciting and memorable way. The kit is designed for 10 student groups.

The kit includes full instructions plus BactoBeads™, plasmid DNA, IPTG, ampicillin, transformation solution, Luria broth, ReadyPour™ agar, sterile loops, pipettes, microtubes, and petri dishes. Required equipment includes a water bath, 37 °C incubator, microwave or hot plate, and a long‑wave UV lamp for fluorescence visualisation.

Key Features

  • Transform E. coli with GFP, BFP, or both fluorescent protein genes
  • Teaches students about bioluminescence, gene expression, and transformation
  • Uses BactoBeads™ for simple preparation of competent cells
  • Clear visual results using UV fluorescence
  • Complete kit for 10 student groups
  • Includes plasmid DNA, IPTG, ampicillin, media, agar, and sterile consumables
  • Hands‑on introduction to a major tool in biotechnology and genetic engineering

You need: Water bath, 37 °C incubation oven, microwave or hot plate, long‑wave UV lamp.

Ideal for School Science Lessons & Biotechnology Courses

Perfect for GCSE, KS5, and A‑Level Biology, this kit brings genetics and biotechnology to life through exciting visual outcomes. Students observe fluorescent colonies firsthand, reinforcing understanding of:

  • Bacterial transformation and plasmid uptake
  • Gene expression and protein synthesis
  • Differences between wild-type and mutant genes
  • Real-world applications of GFP and BFP in research
  • Aseptic technique and microbiological laboratory skills
  • Use of inducers (IPTG) in gene regulation

Engaging, highly visual, and scientifically rich, the Transformation of E. coli with Blue & Green Proteins Kit is an excellent choice for introducing students to modern biotechnology and genetic engineering techniques.
