This premium NiTi Memory Wire (nickel‑titanium alloy) offers an engaging and hands‑on way to explore shape memory materials in science and design & technology lessons. Supplied as a 1‑metre length of 0.80mm diameter wire, it naturally “remembers” its original straight form.
When bent into a new shape and then placed in very hot water (around 90 °C), the wire immediately returns to its original straight condition. This behaviour can be repeated indefinitely, making it ideal for classroom demonstrations of phase change, material structure, and smart technologies.
NiTi memory wire can also be heat treated to remember brand‑new shapes. Simply hold the wire in the desired form and heat it to approximately 500 °C in a small oven for a few minutes. Once cooled, it will “remember” the new shape and return to it whenever reheated.
Because of its remarkable properties, NiTi alloy is widely used in modern engineering and healthcare. Real‑world applications include surgical stents, orthodontic braces, and even smart textiles that change support or structure when warmed by body temperature. This makes memory wire an inspiring material for students exploring innovation, materials science, and STEM design.
This NiTi Memory Wire is ideal for KS3, GCSE, and A‑Level science, physics, engineering, and D&T courses. Its dramatic, heat‑activated shape recovery makes it perfect for hands‑on demonstrations and student investigations.
Versatile, inspiring, and simple to use, this NiTi Memory Wire brings materials science to life and encourages creativity and curiosity across the STEM curriculum.
