This impressive Two‑Way Memory Spring is engineered from a specialist brass‑based shape‑memory alloy that reacts instantly to temperature changes. At room temperature, the spring remains tightly closed. When heated—typically by immersion in hot water at around 90 °C—it rapidly opens out to its extended position. Once cooled again, the spring returns to its closed state just as quickly.
This reversible behaviour makes the spring perfect for demonstrating phase change, energy transfer, and smart materials in action. Such devices are used in real‑world applications including sprinkler systems and fire‑damping assemblies, where they can replace costly single‑use fusible links with efficient, repeatable mechanisms.
The spring measures 10mm when closed and expands to approximately 25mm when heated. It has an 11.5mm external diameter, 9mm internal diameter, and weighs just 3g.
This Two‑Way Memory Spring is an excellent teaching tool for KS3, GCSE, and A‑Level physics, engineering, and design & technology lessons. Its instantly visible transformation makes it highly engaging and ideal for practical demonstrations.
Reliable, reusable, and fascinating to observe, this Two‑Way Memory Spring provides an excellent introduction to the world of shape memory alloys and enhances hands‑on learning across the STEM curriculum.
