This simulation demonstrates how HIV infection is detected indirectly by identifying antibodies to HIV in a patient’s blood rather than the virus itself.

In this practical investigation, students coat microtiter plate wells with simulated HIV antigens and then test simulated donor serum samples for the presence of anti‑HIV antibodies. If antibodies are present, they bind to the antigen and are detected using an enzyme‑linked secondary antibody. The addition of substrate produces a clear colour change, allowing students to visually interpret positive and negative results.
