2,6‑Dichlorophenolindophenol, commonly known as DCPIP, is a well‑known redox indicator supplied in a 1g pack for educational laboratory use. Often supplied as the sodium salt hydrate, this reagent is widely used in school science to demonstrate oxidation–reduction reactions with clear and easily observed colour changes.
Identified by CAS Number: 620‑45‑1 and with no UN number, DCPIP is not classified as hazardous for transport when handled appropriately. In solution, it changes from a blue colour to colourless when reduced, making it particularly effective for practical investigations involving electron transfer reactions.
Supplied in solid form for stability and long shelf life, DCPIP can be easily prepared into aqueous solutions as required, offering flexibility and consistency for repeated classroom experiments.
DCPIP is an essential reagent for GCSE and A‑Level biology and chemistry lessons, particularly where respiration, redox reactions, and biochemical processes are studied. Its rapid and distinct colour change makes it highly effective for hands‑on student investigations.
Reliable, visually engaging, and closely aligned with curriculum requirements, 2,6‑Dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP) is a valuable teaching reagent that helps students gain a clear understanding of redox chemistry and biological processes through practical experimentation.
