Edvotek® AIDS Kit II – Simulation of HIV Detection by Western Blot (80220)

The Edvotek® AIDS Kit II: Simulation of HIV Detection by Western Blot introduces students to the second, confirmatory test used in HIV diagnostics. Following an initial positive ELISA result, the Western blot technique is traditionally used to confirm the presence of specific viral proteins. This introductory‑level experiment allows students to explore this essential diagnostic method in a safe, classroom‑appropriate simulation.

In this practical investigation, students separate simulated protein samples from hypothetical patients using agarose gel electrophoresis. The proteins are then transferred to a membrane and analysed to detect simulated HIV proteins. The activity closely follows real laboratory procedures while remaining entirely suitable for educational use.

This experiment corresponds to Edvotek Experiment 275 and is designed for educational purposes only. No infectious agents or human blood products are included. For more in‑depth study, Edvotek also offers a comprehensive advanced course (Cat. #317).

Key Features

  • Introductory simulation of HIV confirmation testing
  • Demonstrates the principles of the Western blot technique
  • Uses agarose gel electrophoresis to separate proteins
  • Protein transfer to membrane for immunological detection
  • Detects simulated HIV proteins for safe classroom learning
  • Closely models real‐world medical diagnostic workflows
  • No live virus or hazardous biological materials included

Ideal for School Science Lessons

Suitable for A‑Level Biology, Applied Science, and introductory college‑level courses, this experiment helps students understand how multiple laboratory techniques are combined to diagnose viral infections. It reinforces learning in immunology, protein analysis, and electrophoresis while highlighting the importance of confirmatory testing in medicine.

  • Teaching how Western blotting confirms diagnostic results
  • Supporting lessons on HIV, viruses, and immune responses
  • Linking ELISA screening to confirmatory laboratory testing
  • Developing skills in gel electrophoresis and protein transfer
  • Preparing students for advanced study in biomedical and life sciences

Clear, structured, and classroom‑safe, the Edvotek® AIDS Kit II provides students with valuable insight into how molecular biology techniques are applied in real‑world medical diagnostics and supports confident progression into advanced laboratory learning.
