The Edvotek® AIDS Kit II: Simulation of HIV Detection by Western Blot introduces students to the second, confirmatory test used in HIV diagnostics. Following an initial positive ELISA result, the Western blot technique is traditionally used to confirm the presence of specific viral proteins. In this practical investigation, students separate simulated protein samples from hypothetical patients using agarose gel electrophoresis. The proteins are then transferred to a membrane and analysed to detect simulated HIV proteins.
