The g by Free Fall Apparatus is a precision physics teaching aid designed for accurately determining the acceleration due to gravity (g) in KS4 and post‑16 science lessons. This classic experiment provides a clear, hands‑on method for linking mathematical theory with real‑world measurement, making it ideal for GCSE and A‑Level physics.
The apparatus consists of an electromagnet housed in a robust plastic moulded case, supplied with a heavy steel sphere, and a separate platform unit containing a cork mat and a precision microswitch. The electromagnet unit includes connections for an external electronic timer, allowing accurate measurement of fall time.
In operation, the steel sphere is held by the electromagnet and released by moving the switch to the upward position. This single action simultaneously releases the sphere and starts the timer. When the sphere lands on the cork mat, the impact activates the microswitch, stopping the timer instantly. This measured time can then be used to calculate the value of g with a high degree of accuracy.
For best results, this apparatus is recommended for use with the Eisco Laboratory Timer (Code 0945), which includes an integrated power supply for the electromagnet.
Ideal for GCSE and A‑Level physics, this free fall apparatus enables students to carry out a classic mechanics experiment with precision and confidence. It strongly reinforces understanding of motion, time measurement, and gravitational acceleration while developing practical and analytical skills.
Reliable, accurate, and curriculum‑focused, the g by Free Fall Apparatus is an essential piece of equipment for delivering high‑quality mechanics experiments in the school physics laboratory.
