Infrared Probe – IPC

The IPC Infrared Probe is a laboratory sensor designed to detect infrared radiation in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. It uses a phototransistor with peak sensitivity around 940nm, allowing qualitative measurement of infrared light intensity.

The probe is mounted on a fibreglass wand for ease of handling and is intended for use with suitable voltmeter equipment for educational experiments in radiation and optics.

Key Features

  • Phototransistor sensor with peak response at ~940nm (infrared range)
  • Mounted on fibreglass wand for safe and accurate positioning
  • 250mm connecting lead
  • Two 4mm plug connectors for standard lab compatibility
  • Produces a voltage proportional to incident infrared radiation
  • Supplied with instructional guidance

Operating Requirements

  • Suitable voltmeter required (e.g. 2V DC voltmeter, BEES Code 80078)

Educational Use

This infrared probe is ideal for physics and electronics education, particularly in experiments involving electromagnetic radiation and optical sensing. It is commonly used for:

  • Investigating infrared radiation from heat sources
  • Studying the electromagnetic spectrum beyond visible light
  • Comparing IR emission from different materials
  • Demonstrating sensor response to non-visible radiation
  • Exploring energy transfer via thermal radiation

The probe provides a simple and effective way to introduce infrared detection and measurement in laboratory-based science education.
