The Photochromic Pigment (Orange) is a light‑responsive material that provides an instant and visually striking colour change when exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light. In normal indoor lighting conditions, the pigment appears pale off‑white, but when exposed to UV light it rapidly transforms into a bright, vivid orange. Once the UV source is removed, the pigment gradually reverts back to its original pale colour.
Supplied in a convenient plastic syringe containing 3g of pigment, this format allows for accurate dispensing and easy handling during practical activities. When mixed with a suitable binder such as an acrylic base, the pigment can be permanently applied to a wide range of surfaces, including paper, card, plastic, wood, and other experimental or creative materials.
The intensity of the colour change depends on the concentration of pigment used. More dilute mixtures produce a subtler colour shift, while higher concentrations result in a stronger visual effect. The optimal mixing ratio is best determined experimentally; however, a 50:50 pigment‑to‑binder mix is recommended as a reliable starting point.
Ideal for KS3, GCSE, and A‑Level science lessons, this photochromic pigment offers an engaging way to explore how materials respond to light energy. It is particularly effective for:
Bright, responsive, and easy to use, the Photochromic Pigment (Orange) helps bring abstract concepts about light, energy, and materials to life, promoting active learning and scientific curiosity in the classroom.
