This high-quality NiTi Shape Memory Spring is made from a nickel-titanium alloy renowned for its shape memory and superelastic properties. At room temperature, the spring is soft and easily extended with a small pulling force, reaching up to 50mm in length.
When heated to around 70 °C-either by passing an electric current through the coil or using hot water, a heat gun, or another heat source-the spring rapidly contracts back to its original length. During contraction, it provides a useful pulling force equivalent to lifting a 0.5 kg weight, making it ideal for demonstrations of material behaviour, energy transfer, and smart materials in action.
Compact and lightweight, this NiTi spring weighs just 1.1 g and measures 20 mm (closed length) with a 5.5 mm external diameter and 4 mm internal diameter.
This NiTi Shape Memory Spring is an excellent teaching tool for KS3, GCSE, and A-Level science and technology lessons. Its dramatic, heat-activated movement vividly demonstrates the behaviour of smart materials and the relationship between temperature, energy, and material structure.
Reliable, compact, and engaging, this NiTi Shape Memory Spring brings material science concepts to life and enriches practical learning in the classroom.
